Who Are Social Services and What Do They Do?

Today, we want to talk to you all about social services. A legal service that no parent wants to be involved in their child’s life. But today, we will share with you who they are and what they do, helping you to be more aware that they are not all that bad.

Who Are Social Services?

Social services are a government lead organisation that focuses highly upon the safety, safeguarding and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults across the United Kingdom.

What Do Social Services Do?

The main role of social services is to ensure that children and vulnerable adults are in a safe environment. Keeping these people in a safe environment is their main priority.

Social services will generally only become involved in your life when a report has been made against your family. This can be from anyone. A member of the public, a school teacher, a healthcare professional, your health visitor, or even yourself. Anyone who deems your environment is not safe can report you.

This is when they will become involved and assess the situation. If they deem your environment is safe for the person in question, you will find that you are not bothered by them. However, if they deem the situation is unsafe they will take control. They will help you as best as they can to make the situation safe for the person in question. In the worse cases, they may have to take the person in question (child or vulnerable adult) away from the situation and placed into foster care. But this does not happen to every case they deal with.

So, if social services do come into your life, remember their priority is the safety of those who are vulnerable. They don’t want to take your child away from you, they want to help you but still, need to do their job to keep the child safe.
